Wine Aerator Reviews

Wine aerators are a relatively new product on the market. As with any such product the potential buyer has to satisfy themselves that the product will be a genuine benefit to him and will perform as advertised. This article offers advice on buying the right one for you.

One of the bets ways to satisfy yourself that the wine aerator you are thinking of buying is worth the money, is to read reports and reviews from people who have either already bought and used the product or from professional reviewers who have tested the product ‘in the lab’. By reading these reviews you can decide for yourself if the wine aerator is just another gadget or a useful tool to improve the quality of your wine and worth your hard-earned cash.

What does a Wine Aerator do?

The clue is in the name. To aerate something is to add air to it or, more specifically, to add oxygen. If you have ever watched, or taken part in, a wine-tasting session, you will have noticed that the experienced tasters would swirl the wine around in the glass before smelling or  tasting it. This has the effect of adding air to the wine and releasing more of the aroma molecules into the air.

Pouring the wine into a decanter has the same effect, but is faster and more effective than moving the wine around in the glass. The idea of the decanter is to expose as much as the wine as possible to the air. For some, this process is still too slow, which is when they turn to gadgets such as the wine aerator. Wine is poured through the device which attempt to promote as much wine-to-air contact as possible in the shortest possible time.

What effect does aerating have on the wine?

You may have noticed that your second glass of wine will often taste better than the first. This is not the wine taster’s equivalent of ‘beer-goggles’, but due to the wine having had more time to react with the air. All but the most mature vintages will benefit from being allowed to ‘breathe’ before being drunk.

Many newly opened wines will have little aroma. The wine experts will call them ‘tight’ or ‘closed’. Exposing these wines to air may bring out the flavor. Other wines may have an acidic taste due to the tannic acid they contain. Aerating these wines will soften the taste and make them more palatable.

Wines often improve with age, becoming more complex and flavorsome and aerating them may help to bring out their potential.

Do wine aerators really work?

Aerators are used in many restaurants and during tasting sessions but the buyers could also have fallen victim to the hype of these gadgets and it does nothing to prove that they are really effective.

Reading reviews of aerators on the Internet may help you decide for yourself if these devices actually do improve the flavor of your wine but be wary of those reviews which are merely promoting their own, or someone else’s, product. Try to find unbiased and genuine reviews, which will include bad as well as good points. If the review is 100% good and contains a plethora of superlatives, you should be very wary.

Some reviewers will have undertaken more scientific investigations with ‘blind’ taste tests between un-aerated and aerated wines, carried out by experienced and professional tasters.

Even after reading reviews bear in mind that wine taste is a very subjective thing. Most of us will not possess the refined palette belonging to the pro and wines that they describe as ‘aggressive’ or ‘angry’ may be a perfectly good drink for the rest of us.

If, after reading the reviews, you feel that you would like to try a wine aerator yourself the top brands in the USA are  the Vinturi, the Soirée and the Repirer. Lots of fun could definitely be had by buying one of these devices and inviting your friends around for your own product tests! Just be careful not to allow a ‘blind’ test to become a ‘blind-drunk’ test and you could end up writing your own reviews of wine aerators to help other people make that decision as to whether they are part of the wine connoisseurs’ hype or useful gadget which really do improve the taste of your favorite beverage!
