Finding a used Mobility Scooter Online

Many of us only appreciate our freedom only when we start to lose it. Mobility scooters are a great way of regaining that freedom and this article offers advice in choosing the right one for you.

If you have limited mobility due to illness or disease daily life can soon become very limited. What used to be a simple stroll to the store can become a painful struggle and longer journeys to visit your family and friends just impossible.

Mobility scooters are excellent for giving you back a slice of your independence and the freedom to resume going where you want to go, when you want to go there. They are powered by rechargeable batteries and are cheap to run.

Mobility scooters are preferred by many people to wheelchairs as they are visually more appealing, looking like small motorbikes or carts and carry less of a stigma in the eyes of the general public.

The cost of a new Mobility Scooter

Some people may be discouraged from investing in a mobility scooter due to the high price of a new model. If you completely lose the ability to walk  then your Medicare insurance may foot the bill but, for those of you with only  limited mobility insurance may not be willing to pay.

The cost of a mobility scooter varies depending on the model and its features, but will be in the range of $1,000 to $3,000. The good news is that second-hand mobility scooters are available on many of the online shopping sites such as craigslist.org and  Amazon and eBay. It’s possible to achieve a saving of 60% or more shopping online in this way. Often people are anxious to get rid of articles of this nature, which may have belonged to an elderly family member who is no longer with them. They take up lots of space and bargains can be found.

But before you go shopping  you need to decide which kind of mobility scooter is right for you.

The different kinds of Mobility Scooter.

Portable Mobility scooters

These models are very light, fold down to a convenient size and easily fit in the trunk of your car. They are ideal for moving around in your garden or home and for short trips to the shops. They are not very robust, however, and longer journeys should not be attempted with this type of scooter. They have a limited range due to the size of the battery.

4 mph scooters

These more robust scooters  are limited to use on sidewalks but can cover much larger distances than the portable type. They are also more stable and will feel more comfortable to drive and manoeuvre.

8 mph scooters

These models are designed to be road worthy and are allowed on the public highway. They are capable of even longer trips than the 4 mph scooters but need to be fitted with indicators and lights and, of course, will be more expensive. Both the larger types of scooter can go for around twenty miles on a single charge.

The average model can accommodate individuals weighing up to 300lbs. If you weigh more consider a heavy duty model, which can carry up to 500lbs. The more robust models come with four wheels.

Check out the real thing

Before starting your online search it is beneficial to visit some of your local scooter stores, where you can compare models and try them out. This is the only way to really know how manoeuvrable and comfortable a particular model or make is.
