How to Cook Steak in the Oven

This articles covers the basics of how to cook steak in the oven if that’s what you want to do with your steak rather than grilling or frying it which is the traditional method of cooking.

Cooking steak is an art in itself and mainly depends on the quality of the cut of meat and how long you cook it.

Choosing your cuts of meat

Actually filet steak although lean and without much fat doesn’t have that much flavor if you don’t season it or even hanging it for a month doesn’t do too much for the taste.

Common cuts such as sirloin rump or ribeye normally suffice. With ribeye you get the best of both worlds because the fat of the eye melts into the steak when cooking it. Rump also has great flavour because of where it is on the animal.

The best way to cook a steak

Generally you should be using a cast iron griddle pan which should be hot but not too hot. Water droplets should disappear in about 3 seconds. Season your steak with salt and pepper (you can’t add too much salt as the meat will only absorb what it needs).

Cook the meat for about 3 minutes each side and try not to keep turning. One cook on each side is enough. Cook for longer if you don’t want your steak too rare. Once it’s ready allow the cooked steak to rest for 3-4 minutes as it really adds to the flavor.

Cooking steak in the oven

oven-steakReally you should not cook steak in the oven as it will dry it out but if you don’t have a grill or a frying pan then wrap the steak up in tin foil perhaps with some onions if you like that and leave it in for about 15 minutes on 350f. The juices then stay with the steak and won’t spill out all over the oven and keep it as tender as possible.

Other methods are to use braising steak that you would use in stews. Put it in the oven in a glass bowl with a lid and add in the gravy and vegetables. If you are using a packet sauce the instructions will be there but generally one hour should suffice. You should fry the braising steak first before you add it into the oven.

Oven cooked steak recipe

Here’s a simple recipe for a beef casserole if you have steak and want to oven cook.

Ingredients:

Method: Cut the steak into cubes and dunk in the flour and season with the pepper and salt to taste or other seasonings you prefer. Grill or fry these pieces so they are browned on all sides. Add all the ingredients into an oven proofed dish and cook for about 90 minutes to 2 hours.

The mixture should be boiling away in your oven. Just make sure you have a lid on it otherwise there’ll be nothing left. You can of course put this on your hob if desired.

i’ve just put two lamb chop foils in a gas grill with lime juice, tabasco sauce, garlic, salt, black and white pepper, masterfoods periperi spice mix.

very interested to see what happens. i have no oil and havn’t eaten dinner, it’s midnight .

If this works well than i’ll stop using oil. I will buy coconut oil for the occasional frying pan venture.
