How Do Hurricanes Form During Hurricane Season ?

Officially hurricane season lasts several months from 1 June to 30 November each year and we answer how do hurricanes form in this article.

The hurricane season generally affects the Caribbean Coast, Mexico and sometimes Miami Florida and the Gulf Coast.  Generally the worst hurricanes occur from August to October because the sea temperature is highest in the summer months with the strongest tropical storms and are on a par with tornadoes and cyclones in the sense of their strength and damage caused when they hit landfall.

All these storms are tracked by hurricane tracking folks and the weather stations so you know if something is heading your way and the national hurricane center has a watch that puts out any warnings so preparation is a minimum so you can keep a watch on the weather in your area.

Each tropical storm and tornado are given names of people and start with the letter a and end in z. The most popular are hurricane alberto gilbert andrew wilma chris rita camille betsy hugo and jeanne.

So how do hurricanes form ?

The scientific term for hurricanes is a tropical cyclone and form over the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and all form in the same manner.

Cyclones closer to China and Hong Kong are given the name typhoon.

They form over the warm waters of the oceans and use this hot moist air as fuel to develop and grow. This warm humid air moves upwards from the surrounding winds to form clouds leaving a low pressure area below. Warm air left around this area pushes into the low pressure area and that air rises as well. The clouds and air begin to spin and the process continues. As the storm speeds up to 39 miles per hour the storm is called a tropical storm. Only when it’s at 74 miles per hour is it named a hurricane.

In the middle is the eye of the storm which has very low pressure and is very calm. When the storm passes over head the winds will drop to zero under the actual eye but build up again once the eye has passed by.

All hurricanes have a category based on the wind speed. From category 1 where it’s just become a hurricane with wind speed of between 74 and 95 mph will cause less damage than a category 5 hurricane at wind speeds of over 155 miles per hour producing a storm surge of over 19 feet and huge land damage if it hits land.

Preparing for a Hurricane and safety tips

Most people that live in the areas hurricanes generally hit border their windows with shutters and plywood and have cans of food and maybe a shelter to go to when the hurricane passes by.

Only in severe circumstances are people evacuated and taken inland. If you live in an area where these storms occur you will have help and guidance of what you need to do. Most hurricanes you can stay in your home and just protect windows from smashing and that anything that could be picked up by the strong winds is either indoors or secure.

You’ll need plenty of food and water to survive the days during the storm and the days or perhaps weeks afterwards if your local supermarket can get new supplies. Remember that people will buy everything in the store as a panic buy so prepare in advance. Water, canned and packet food lasts for years so ensure you have a supply.

Look after your pets. Ensure you can house them inside and you have enough food and water for them as well as yourselves.
