Cell Phone Signal Boosters
If you have a cell phone and get poor reception then you can use signal boosters to get better reception. Here’s an overall of what is on offer.
The cell phone has become more than another communications device to keep in touch with friends and family. It has become the equivalent of the emergency radio, allowing us to summon help in times of need no matter where we may be located: when our car breaks down on a lonely country road in the dead of night, when we are threatened at 2 a.m. by a crazy drunk in a deserted city center, or when we injure ourselves following some outdoor pursuit far from the normal lines of communication.
That is, at least, the theory and the comfort blanket that makes that makes us feel almost naked when we forget to take our cellular friend along with us on even the most mundane journey.
However, they may be miracles of miniaturized technology but they cannot function without a strong signal from a reliable network. A cell phone without a signal is just a useless lump of plastic and wires in our hand.
Cellular Dead Zones
Cellular coverage has reached 90% of the world’s population. As you may suspect, remote regions are less adequately covered than urban concentrations but, even in our biggest cities there are so called “cellular dead zones” which can make using your phone an exercise in frustration. Even in your home or office there may be areas which have poor reception. I live on the 29th floor of a tower block slap bang in the middle of the main business district of Manila and trying to send a text from there is a random hit-or-miss affair; receiving a voice call almost impossible! What can we do in such situations?
Using a Cell Phone Signal Booster
There are a whole range of devices on the market which claim to solve the problem of weak cell phone reception. These cell phone boosters can help improve the signal to your phone by acting like a TV antenna and amplifying the weak signal to a point where a call is possible.
Cell phone boosters are like miniature cellular broadcast towers used by the network service providers. Most cell phone boosters work with most of the major mobile phone carriers networks but it is sensible to check the specifications of the device you intent to purchase, as some may only work with specific providers or phones.
Different Types of Cell Phone Booster
There are different kinds of cell phone boosters, depending on your needs. The most basic are the Internal Antenna Boosters which are placed inside the phone itself, often under the battery, or booster “stickers” which are simply attached to your existing phone antenna. These kinds of boosters have had some very bad press over the years and are often considered not to work at all, with many consumer tests claiming that there are a scam and do not work as advertised.
External cell phone signal boosters are more effective but will not increase your cell phone signal to super strength, as often claimed. However, they can improve your signal enough to make it usable when the signal is too weak to work at all. Manufacturers of such boosters include Wilson Electronics, JD Teck and Zboost, with prices ranging from around $150 to $400 for mobile model and from around $500 for mounted in-building boosters.
The results you get with these boosters will still vary depending on a whole range of factors such as the original signal strength and the materials in your building. Wood, stone and metal all block cell phone signals to varying degrees. You will also have to make sure that you place the booster in the optimum spot to capture the original signal.
Recommendations for choosing a Cell Phone Booster
Steer clear of the internal models. There is no convincing evidence that they really work and you may be able to improve you signal just as effectively by moving a few feet to the left or stepping outside your building or vehicle. For the more professional models, the best approach for choosing one that will work for you is to use a dealer that offers different types of boosters, and that will allow you to try several different models. In this way you can try a range of different devices to find the one that works with your phone, your provider, and in your area, building or car.
