How to get Baby to Sleep Through the Night
If you’re suffering sleepless nights here are some tips on how to get baby to sleep through the night every night from here on in.
Most new parents will experience some sleep loss from new born until their child has left home but the age old question of how to get baby to sleep through the night is not that difficult to answer.
Our baby is now just past 6 months old and is coming up for teething although she has been teething for months now but she has slept through the night since she was 6 weeks old.
This advice is from what we have done. It’s right for our daughter so let’s hope it helps you out.
Top advice on sleeping through the night – have a routine.
As soon as just a few weeks we were attempting to get our daughter into a routine as much as possible through the day and through the night. We have put our routine below so you can see how and what we do on a daily basis.
Next top tip – have naps during the day – see routine later
This may sound odd but babies cry during the night if they are tired. They will also be restless during the day if they don’t have a nap and it’s also wise to add the nap into their daily routine rather than just let them sleep when they want to.
What to do when they wake up
Every baby will wake during the night at some point be we found that if they wake there may beĀ justĀ 5 things they may need.
We struggled with this for ages because of course our child can not talk so couldn’t tells us what was wrong but really it boiled down to one of the following:
- She had a wet or dirty nappy and wanted it changed
- She wanted her dummy and couldn’t find it so we popped it back for her
- She wanted a cuddle and this would sometimes send her off to sleep as soon as we picked her up
- She had colic and needed winding. We picked her up and padded her back behind her right arm as well as rubbing around her back anti-clockwise until she burped
- She was hungry – certainly before her routine and every month or so during a growth spurt she would wake up and the only thing that would send her off to sleep would be to feed her another bottle of formula during the night – this didn’t/ doesn’t happen that often and this is almost the last resort
Now she is teething some teething gell or calpol can sooth the pain in her gums.
Other top tip – Craino Osteopath
One other thing we did with her from an early age was to take her along to craino osteopath. If she was grumpy in the weeks before her trip certainly afterwards she was much calmer and went to sleep a lot easier.
Final tip – Wear Them Out !
Now she is six months she has tons of energy and we take her swimming a couple of times a week. We have bought a blow up ring that she sits in and paddles around almost violently which uses up a lot of energy. At night whenever we put her to bed she goes to sleep straight away.
Our Daily Routine
Now she is in a routine it’s much easier for to get baby to sleep though the night and here’s what we do.
- 6.30am – she wakes up and talks to herself in her cot
- 7.00am – get her up and change nappy. Take her downstairs and make up a bottle and feed her
- 7.00-8.30am – play time
- 8.30am – feed her solids of porridge and some water
- 9.00-10.00am – nap time in her cot
- 10.00am – get her up and put on day time clothes and it’s her play time
- 11.00am – make a bottle
- 11.15am – feed bottle
- 11.30am – lunch time of solids – home made mix of various vegetables with a babies yoghart
- 12.00am – sleep time for 2 hours
- 2pm – get her up again and let her play
- 4.30pm – tea time – the same as lunch time
- 6.00pm – bath time for 20 minutes with Daddy
- 6.30pm – final bottle and time for bed
At bed time we have a black out blind so her room is dark and also the baby monitor has various “plinky plonk” nursery rhymes that are played whenever she goes to sleep so she knows that the tunes signal it’s time for sleep.
